Quebec’s passionate recognition for Maurice Richard’s on-ice ferocity and off-ice dignity enlightened its people, refreshed the French culture and changed Canada irrevocably. Even when his best hockey years were over, when Richard, nicknamed “The Rocket” was on the ice…it was safe to say there was no finer sight. He was not only a hockey player but a role model, an icon, a hero and a legend who will be remembered throughout both hockey’s and Canada’s history. Maurice had started off as just a hockey player with brittle bones who had potential. Due to the effects of the Second World War, teams were desperate for athletes who weren't in the military. Richard was available and he successfully made the Canadiens in 1942-43. (Foran, Charles. Maurice Richard pg.7-13) What made him the icon he was to become was the way he began and continued scored his goals. On the ice, there was nobody as fierce, intense or as strong especially during that time when everybody’s mind was on the anti-French bias in Canada. It was the passion within him each time he sneaked past an opposing goalie, often with another player or several players clinging to his back. When those ferocious and deadly eyes he was known for, saw their target and final destination, there was no stopping regardless of what stood in their way.
