Case Study - Mattel’s Toy Woes Case (pp.329- 332) Based on the facts presented to me, the issue is what changes should Mattel do to ensure that its toys, regardless of production site, contain only the permissible amounts of lead, if any. I propose long term policy changes to implement a Three Tier Plan. The plan’s only goal is to make sure lead does not enter the toys through either paint or thorough another means at any level of the organization including the subcontractor level. First tier of the plan will involve testing every toy instead of the current Batch level testing for lead and other chemicals deemed unsafe at certain levels by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is a large undertaking that has yet to be seen made by any other toy manufacturer in the world, which makes Mattel’s initiative extraordinary and innovative. Testing every toy will rebuild trust in the Mattel brand that may have been lost during the lead mishap. By taking the mammoth step of testing every toy Mattel is making the safety of its products to be the highest priority which will align with parents and show that both parents and Mattel are on the same side. Second tier of our Plan is to build a Market Surveillance Team, this team will be showcase a global presence of hand picked staff members of Mattel who will randomly yet periodically visit every licensed store,at least once a year, carrying Mattel toys to check for lead and other non-permissible chemicals in toys. This part of the plan is to be the most visual where the staff wear jackets embossed with “MARKET SURVEILLANCE TEAM, MATTEL”. This will generate store presence and establish and reinforce confidence in the brand and show that Mattel cares about its products to levels unfathomable by any, even its competitors. Third tier of the plan is to get a VP of Corporate Responsibility who plans perhaps with a third party
