support teaching and learning Unit 312 Support numeracy development Outcome 1: Understand current national and organisational frameworks for mathematics 1.1: Explain the aims and importance of learning provision for numeracy development The aims and importance of learning provision for numeracy development is to ensure that all pupils understand that maths is an important part of everyday life, and will continue to be used throughout their life. Maths is taught to children in many different ways, sometimes there can be too much emphasis on the recording of ‘sums’, if this is introduced to children too early it can slow down the pupil’s progress in thinking mathematically. Maths is now taught very differently to when I was in school, because there is more emphasis now in how you arrive at the answer and finding different methods of arriving at the correct answer particularly in the early primary phase. Showing the children different methods of arriving at the answer improves their investigation skills. The mathematics curriculum is intended to give the children a better understanding of numeracy.
Reflection on Liebeck and Skemp Reflecting on my readings of Skemp, R. (1989) Mathematics in the Primary School, and Liebeck, P. (1990) How Children Learn Mathematics. I have reflected on the importance of Mathematics in the world around us as human beings and how it is taught within our schools. Skemp asks the question ‘Why is Mathematics still a problem subject for so many?’ One of the theories put forward is that the teaching of Maths is seen as satisfying teachers and adults by children achieving ticks for their mathematical work passing exams without fully understanding the subject. However children are achieving this through rote, a form of habitual learning. Intelligent learning is adaptable achieving the answer by way of different procedures or routes (building up knowledge) in understanding how to figure out the problem by a variety of schemas.
Developmentally Appropriate: This activity is developmentally appropriate because reading with children enhance their language and literacy skills. RC II-3 Creative Arts Title: Making Music instrument Age: 3-5years old Materials: Paper towel rolls, construction paper, glue, paint, paint brush, rice, pipe cleaners, ribbons, cans, wooden sticks, all kinds of recycle materials. Description: The children will learn to make musical instruments with recycle products. They will learn about each other cultures and countries. Intended Goal: To encourage the children’s imaginative play and creativity.
Pictures: Pictures are used alongside words to make communication more easier and understandable. In fact in my placement school, the reading scheme that is used starts the children off with ‘picture only’ books so the children are encouraged to talk about the pictures in the book and make their own story up and ask questions. Technology: Computer programmes (apps and games), interactive whiteboard, story tapes, cds are all ways of stimulating a child’s communication development. These days a lot of programmes are interactive and children can hear and respond to different applications made specially to help develop their

My nursery rhyme pack which was a rhyme (Hey diddle diddle), a jigsaw that matched the song and also a finger puppet that the children could use whilst singing the song was a very good and fun idea for the children. It helped develop the children’s social, communication, and intellectual skills. A way in which it helped to develop their social skills was by them singing along with each other and interacting with each other. After I had completed my activity with them they were asking me many different questions for example, ‘how did you make the jigsaw’ and ‘can I have ago at using the finger puppets’, so by that they were also developing their communication skills.
You must be professional and approachable to children giving them lots of praise and eye contact. If you do this the child feels comfortable around you. If the child feels happy and comfortable and able to trust you then you are making the right impression on them. Allowing the child to come to you when they feel uncomfortable or they need assistance with something. Children tend to role play themselves through play playing schools and playing the role of teachers, playing mums and dads, etc so this proves that the way in which adults behave has a strong impact on how children look up to adults as role models.
Changes in the teaching of the new math curricula versus the basic teachings are getting better for some student coming up learning math especially in the K-3 school. Another Phi Delta Kappan article called “Parrot Math (Criticism of Why do teachers want to use their strategies instead of learning new ideas their student come up with? The subject of the matter comes up as teachers can also learn from student as well. While a teacher teaches one way which might be long-term for a student, the student might find a different short-term way to solve their problem or equation. This is the kind of mathematics that most parents and government officials recognize as the curricula that they attempted to learn when they were in school.
"Children with challenging behavior and children with disabilities may have strengths in more neglected intelligences—music, art, physical movement, computers, for example. This approach allows them to develop and showcase their unique abilities" (Rasminsky, 2012, p 168). Children emotionally respond the environment they are in. Everybody desires respect, praises, and strong relationships-children are no different. Children must have a role model, most of the time is the teacher or family, but if they are not able to supply the demands than the child may look up to a trouble maker.
Marcela Perez Teacher Assistant Ketchings Cradle Child Dev. February 2, 2009 I am very interested in the teacher assistant position advertised in 35 S. 19th Ave. in Maywood, IL. Please accept my application for the position as teacher assistant at your daycare although I have little experience but I enjoy learning and trying new things. I would like to develop strong teaching skills while creating a fun learning and challenging experience for young motivated children. The preschool/daycare age group is very inspiring to me, because although I have a child of my own, children are very interested in learning new things and they are also very expressive.
Good communication between the staff in the setting is important as the children will copy adults so good use of language is vital in their learning. Visual aids would be used to help children with delayed speech and children who use English as a second language this will enable them to understand language more easily. At the setting we plan circle time discussions where the children are encouraged to talk about different topics and also their lives outside of the setting e.g. what they did at the weekend or holidays they have taken, favourite things or what makes them sad or happy, we use picture cards for the children to show their emotions, each child has an emotion card and is encouraged to lift up that emotion when it is portrayed in the story at story time. The children are encouraged to listen and repeat parts of the story which they always enjoy.
