Math Topics/Concepts The mathematics standard my project will focus on is from the California State Standards for grade 6. I will be focusing on fractions and decimals. Fractions are Number Sense standards and is labeled 1.0: Students compare and order fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. They solve problems involving fractions, ratios, proportions, and percentages. Underneath this standard is a sub standard to get the students to master the main standard. It is labeled Number Sense 1.1: Students will compare and order positive and negative fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers and place them on a number line. Students will also know positive and negative fractions and their correlation of value. By the end of the lessons, students have mastered the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive fractions, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers; they accurately compute and solve problems. I want my students to know how to identify fractions and understand what makes up a fraction. I also want the student to have an understanding of the value of fractions in order to correlate them onto a number line. They should be able to answer questions like: Which fraction is greater? 1/4 or 1/5 30/35 or 42/48 -7/15 or - 4/10 -1/2 or -1/3 Order from least to greatest. -9/10 -2/3 5/8 1/10 ¾ Number Sense 1.1standard focuses on mixed numbered fractions. Students will be able to understand what makes up a mixed numbered fraction and identify one. They will be able to place a mixed numbered fraction in order from least to greatest by identifying the value. They will be able to answer questions such as: Which fraction is greater? -1 3/5 or - 1 3/4 5 2/3 or 5 7/8 Order from greatest to least. 2 1/3 - 5 1/6 0 -1/2 2 ¾ Decimal concepts are also a part of Number Sense Standard 1.1.
