1, 2, Societal attitudes and beliefs can impact individuals with sensory loss in quite a negative way because people in society can be very judgmental towards people with disabilities, and put them in a group of people with below average intelligence and assume they can’t do or think the same way as other people without disabilities can. People in society can also be very prejudice and ignorant and think they are better than people with sensory loss, also thinking it gives them the right to make fun at them and making life difficult in the process. Today, stereotypes are making people think differently of certain people. Some stereotypes are true, but others are made up by the media. Stereotypes are usually based on people’s appearance, their actions, and how they talk. Many stereotypes have hurt people of given people a bad reputation. Jock, cheerleaders and druggies are stereotyped in the media today.

Why do people label and group other people? We label and group other people in order to give them a distinct identity in the society we are in. I believe we label them or mentally sort them into a certain group so that we know how to act around them. It's something most people do automatically to simplify their social interactions. Labeling and grouping other people usually only becomes a problem when we label and group someone incorrectly in a negative manner, which is what most of us associate stereotypes with.
Newton is to educate on the issue of discrimination in the work place and political affairs. Newton believes that discrimination is unjust and that all those affected by it can suffer greatly. She also believes that if there is too much awareness for discrimination and that it can lead to the issue of reverse discrimination. Reverse discrimination is when the awareness for discrimination becomes too high, then the group being discriminated against receive almost a form of special treatment where they start to get more rights than the initial discriminators who are now receiving the discrimination. This creates a form of irony and chaos, where the government and or the community are not sure what to do when it comes to how to treat those of different gender and race in the work place.

There were so many drastic forms of trying to show injustice such as freedom rides, boycotts, and sit ins. Americans believed that their system was that of freedom for all and equal opportunities. Instead it was not equal for those of minorities, there was a great deal of racism and sexism. The Civil Rights movement changed so much in society, the way people thought and felt make a big difference.
