Martin’s father was a pastor and his mother was a teacher at an all black school. Martin had a younger sister named Willie Christine and an older brother named Alfred Daniel. When Martin was growing up he was told by his mother and father that he was a handsome young man and that he should be proud of his color and not to be ashamed of his color and not to let anyone tell him otherwise. King was a very beautiful man and against violence. The in April 1968 he went to Memphis, Tennessee to talk with garbage workers about equal pay and he marched with black garbage workers. On April 4, 1968 in Memphis, he stood outside of the hotel that he was staying in. And a man named James Earl Ray was pointing a gun at Dr. King’s head and he shot the rifle. An hour later, Dr. King died. Everyone remembered him for his great work and his marches for fair rights. Everyone cherished the words carved on his grave and they read “Free At Last, Free At Last, and Thank God Almighty I’m Free At Last”.
