Martin Luther King Martin Luther King Martin Luther King was born on 15th January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was originally born Michael Luther King but later changed his name to Martin. His father, Martin Luther King, was a Baptist minister and his mother a schoolteacher. He attended Booker T Washington High School, where he skipped ninth and twelfth grade and when straight to Morehouse College at the tender age of 15 without officially graduating from high school. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and then later graduated with a Bachelor of divinity from crozer Theological seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1951. Two years later he married Coretta Scott and followed on to have four children – two sons and two daughters He returned to the south in 1954 where he became a pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. King had always been passionate towards equality and was involved in the work of civil rights. At around this time Martin Luther King was a member of the executive committee of the national association for the advancement of coloured people. In December 1955 he lead the bus boycott, which was the first nonviolent protest by Negros in that time, and lasted 382 days. During the boycott Martin was arrested, his home was bombed and he was subjected to personal abuse for leading the boycott, but he still managed to become Negro leader of the first rank. The boycott was successful and around a year later, in December 1956, the laws regarding segregation on buses were changed so that blacks and white rode the bus as equals. The southern Christian leadership conference, the organization was formed by Martin Luther King to find new leadership for the movement on the civil rights.
