Introduction In today’s business environment, marketing is strongly correlated to profit. With the economy being described as “recovering”, companies must minimize the amount of money they spend on marketing. Companies are getting the product to the public more effectively due to the internet. But how can a company minimize the waste when it comes to their advertising? Young people spend more time on them on average than they do their homework. Teachers wish students would focus more on class work than them. Is the “them” we are referring to cell phones? No, we are talking about social networks. “Social networking is based on a certain structure that allows people to both express their individuality and meet people with similar interests” (Nations). Social networking is mainly done online, but it can also be done in person. Companies are starting to integrate social networks in their marketing strategy because it is an effective way to reach millions of potential customers. Those who are users of social networks can understand the potential benefits that a company may see from using this type of marketing strategy. Although there are multiple types of social networking sites available, the two most known are Facebook and Twitter. With hundreds of millions of people using these sites every minute, companies marketing on these sites are able to reach these people more effectively than on the radio, television, or a billboard. Facebook Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, and “had 845 million monthly active users and the end of December 2011” (Facebook). The United States and Canada make up 20% of Facebook’s users, so Facebook has become a global company that will allow a business to market globally. This may scare some advertisers because they may be marketing to a group of people who will not find the product beneficial to them.
