Between my newfound hobby of scuba diving and my longstanding membership in the BSA, my values have always been conservation minded. I chose the topic of marine conservation for my research paper because I really care about the status of the ocean environment. My research question is to discover how marine conservation efforts have improved since the increased popularity of scuba diving? Prior to my research the only real damage to the marine ecosystems that I knew of was the horrible oil spills that were shown on the news. Through my research I hope to discover whether or not efforts to protect the oceans have increased dramatically and whether or not the tourism industry has had a hand in this effort to protect the ocean environments. Marine conservation efforts have improved in the past 50 years because of the fact that coral reefs are disappearing right beneath us; calling more people to action to save what remains, the fact that scuba divers are very conservation-minded, and because of new legislation that has been put into place to provide more protection for the environment. The world’s oceans are a precious and necessary part of our daily life. The majority of the population views the world’s oceans as an endless resource that will always be there. That thought has quickly changed over the last century as the population, and our fishing industries have begun to have a major impact on the, so called, “limitless” oceans (Swing 2). Oceans are not just seen as major resources, they are also seen as beautiful and exciting places of tourism. The world’s oceans and coasts have proven to be major tourist attractions over the past years, but “pollution and the pressure of development” has been slowly destroying people’s desire to visit the coasts (Swing 4).
