Solutions to an Avoidable Epidemic On a normal hot, summer day Mariah McCarthy and her two best friends woke up with the intent of a regular day; little did they know that their lives would change drastically forever that night. The three girls were planning on staying the night at Mariah’s house and decided to walk to their other friend’s home at about midnight. On their way back home, an underage drunk driver hit them. Mariah’s sister received the phone call of her worst nightmare. When the paramedics reached the girls, they didn’t have a heartbeat. The three beautiful, innocent girls had lost their life to someone else’s single mistake, choice and action. In fact, every 30 minutes, someone in this country dies in a alcohol-related crash. Every 30 minutes! How would you feel if you lost a family member to such a simple avoidable mistake? Each year drunk driving is responsible for about 25% of deaths. The Loss of loved ones; loss of important family members and loss of friends resulting from irresponsible drunk drivers on the road are tragic and permanent. Drunk driving is like playing with fire because most of the time, the drunk drivers think they are suitable for driving. Unfortunately, the liquor already affects their minds, they do not care about themselves and other people’s lives, and that is not only selfish but a deadly combination. You have no right to let anyone else suffer from the consequence of your action especially innocent bystanders and their loved ones. One of the biggest causes of drunk driving is the person who hasn’t adequately prepared for the situation. They drive to the bar or party alone and end up drinking more than they had planned without thinking about how they’ll get home. Many drinkers, at this point, become too embarrassed to ask for a ride or underage drinkers are afraid they’ll get in trouble if they reveal they made a mistake. Others simply don’t care. While society has done much to improve highway safety, you can do much more to protect yourself: educate others on the dangers of drunk driving, Volunteer to be a designated driver, take the lead, and be a good responsible host. Don’t drink and drive and don’t ride with anyone who has too much to drink. Remember, it is usually the drivers and their passengers who are harmed by drunk drivers. As Henry David Throeau had said, “Water is the only drink for a wise man.” If we set the standards to use safe driving habits and educate others on the dangers of drunk driving, it will continue to decrease in number. Through the years we have already accomplished a great deal. Lets make that continue! According to drink safely alcohol- related traffic fatalities have dropped from 60% of all traffic deaths in 1982 down to 31% in 2012.
