High school is a time full of bonding and experiences that lead towards maturity and identity of oneself. Looking back on high school I recognize the need to have done several things differently, beginning with the way I treated the staff there to support me. Withal another change I would have implemented was an increased effort in regards to my school work while managing participation in sports. A stronger effort in school work and participation in sports would have heavily influenced the relationships I had in high school, an influence which I now realize could have been for the better. High school is often referred to as being among the best years of ones life, and I believe that if I had instituted the aforementioned changes I would have been better prepared for the future and made high school a more memorable experience. I believe initiating change often begins with changing the way you treat those around you. Teachers’ are charged with the difficult task of aiding students who learning in different ways, and at varying rates. Throughout my high school years I did not treat my teachers’ with the respect they were entitled to. During grade nine I would often show up to class wearing non-uniform clothing. Challenging the dress code was unnecessary because I had uniform clothing at home and readily available. Teachers’ were forced to take time out of their lessons to lecture me because I chose to defy the dress code which I fully understood. This also resulted in my peers losing valuable learning time. On occasion I did not hand in assignments on time. This tardiness lead to poor grades for myself. As well, it also challenged the already busy schedules of teachers, who would chase me down for late assignments and have to mark my work at a late, less convenient date.
