Mandatory Birth Control for Teenagers… Who’s Choice Should It Be? Troyslen Dixon Medical Careers University In 2006, there were 4,265,555 births in the United States according to the National Center for Health Statistics (Bartlett, 2009). There have been intense debates for years about mandating birth control for women on welfare. Considering that nearly 750,000 teens become pregnant every year suggest that we should look at reproductive capabilities of teenagers (Bartlett, 2009). Teenagers that make unwise decisions and become pregnant put an emotional and financial strain on their parents and the government. Some 70 percent of all women in China use contraception. Puberty tends to start earlier as countries develop and children’s diets improve; in China the starting age has fallen from 14 ½ to 12 ½. Meanwhile the average age of marriage has edged up, from 20 to 22, extending to the time that many young people can be sexually active but unmarried. The abortions rate among young, single women is rising. It is a moral outrage to have a child before marriage than it is to have the shame associated with an abortion. Contraceptive pills are available over the counter in China at the drug store and most of them are free. The abortion pill RU486 is legal. They have mobile abortion clinics – vans equipped with a bed, body clamps suction pumps and other tools used to perform abortions. There is no need for the so-called ‘right to life’ argument, no need to introduce ideas about abortion as murder and so on because each family is allowed one child unless the first is a girl. All others will be forced abortions. The fetuses are not even considered a person until after it is born. Traditionally the babies are not even named until 100 days after birth. We can talk to our children until they are blue in the face but if they are not comfortable or we as the parents are not comfortable, it won’t matter.
