It’s “how do we stay successful”? The goal of Six Sigma according to the text is to enable you to understand that Six Sigma is probably the best answer to improved business performance in years as such it is necessary for quality improvement. A Brief History of Six Sigma The discipline of Six Sigma has virtually revolutionized many corporations across the world by turning companies that were once unable to make a profit, into profitable organizations. The Six Sigma concept can be used for any process but is particularly used for tangible goods and services. Six Sigma is a very structured process that focuses on quantitive data to drive decisions and reduce defects (Benedetto, 2003). William Edwards Deming, Joseph Juran and Phillip Crosby are the three main scientists who added to the development of Six Sigma, and the evolution of Quality Management. When comparing Six Sigma to Total Quality Management, it is very apparent that great changes have come about in the evolution of quality (Drake et al, 2008). Six Sigma initially started as a problem solving approach to reduce product variation but has now evolved into other areas such as healthcare and service. Six Sigma initiation started in the early 1980’s by Motorola, which was looking to focus its quality efforts on reducing manufacturing defects.
