Ultra Sonography 11/17/2010 I chose the profession of an Ultra Sonographer. I have been around the medical field my whole life because my mom worked in a hospital for 29 years as a nursing assistant. Then as I came of age I got a job at my mom’s hospital as an administrative assistant where I worked in the Radiology department, it was a great experience. I loved to learn how the machines worked to see what’s going on inside someone’s body whether it was due to pregnancy, or checking patients gall bladder, liver, pancreas, kidneys just to name a few. There are a lot of benefits in working in the medical field as a sonographer.
LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY This paper will define laparoscopy in general, how the surgery used to be performed before laparoscopy was introduced, its impact on the patients and finally our roles and responsibilities as an enrolled nurses in regards to caring for the patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopy or keyhole surgery is a medical procedure used to examine the interior of the abdominal or pelvic cavities to diagnose or treat (or both) a number of different diseases and conditions, including female infertility, diseases of the urinary system including the kidneys and appendicitis (Laparoscopy: Better Health Channel, website 2010). Before laparoscopy was available, doctors always had to make large openings and cut through layers of tissue in order to examine internal organs (laparotomy). The main drawbacks of laparotomy are the extended hospital stay (up to one week or so) and the long recovery time. A person who undergoes open surgery can expect at least six weeks of convalescence. Compared to laparoscopy, laparotomy has increased risks of infection and adhesions.
My 2nd practicum placement is where I give care directly to the patient. I take the patient’s vitals signs, I prepare and administer the medications, I assess the patients for irregularities and I feed and clean them. My first week started with just one patient to take care of, in between those times I try to help out my primary nurse whenever I can. My primary nurse is responsible for 4-6 patients on any given day and so I try to lessen the nurse’s burden by helping out. From my perspective, on some of the ‘routine’ things that needs to be done for the patient, it is just simply done.
I have personal experience with learning about these two jobs- I shadowed numerous orthopedic sports medicine surgeons and physician’s assistants during my senior year of high school as part as an academic internship. I observed many different surgeries and watched how these doctors interacted with all kinds of patients. This internship got me interested in these two careers, which is why I picked them for my research. An orthopedic surgeon operates on patients with musculoskeletal problems- either degenerative, traumatic, congenital, or just plain-old injuries. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons ,half of what an orthopedic surgeon’s practice is geared towards are non-surgical, and the other half surgical management.
Most of their time is spent coordinating with other physicians and providing consultations. Neurologists often spend part of their day at hospitals, where they conduct consultations and follow ups with their patients that are hospitalized. In most cases neurologists operate as solo practitioners, they spend most of their days in examining rooms with patients. As the “Office of Science Education” at the “National Institutes of Health” explains, neurologists talk through the patient histories and assess patients using standard tests for coordination, reflexes, strength and sensation. Based on the patient history, these assessments and the results of any tests done, neurologists formulate diagnoses and recommend treatment options.
This review will help toward that end. Address informed consent issues. While the surgeon is responsible for obtaining informed consent, a patient may discuss the procedure with you, the family physician. (See TABLE 1 for the indications for tonsillectomy.) Although the procedure is safe and effective, the patient and his or her family need to know that bleeding will most likely occur immediately after the procedure, although it can occur at any time during the first 2 weeks postop.
Amy Bauer 16 February 2011 SCI 115 Professor: Susan Kennedy Personalized Medicine Personalized medicine is a medical model emphasizing in general the customization of healthcare, that have decisions and practices that are being tailored to individual patients in whatever ways possible. Recently, this has mainly involved the systematic use of genetic or other information about an individual patient to select or optimize that patient's preventative; extension of traditional approaches to understanding and treating illness. Since the beginning of the study of medicine, physicians have employed evidence found through observation to make a diagnosis or to prescribe treatment. In the past, this was presumably tailored to each individual, but personalized medicine makes treatment more specific. Over the years of medical care have been focuses on standards of care based on studies.
This is a reflective essay based on my attendance at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting whilst on my two-week placement at a local mental health day hospital. The aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of the multidisciplinary team within the mental health environment and discuss factors that can influence the success or failure of multidisciplinary teams. Mental health teams generally comprise of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers, but other therapists such as family therapists, psychotherapists and counsellors might also become involved in the care of the patient (Perkins & Repper 1998). Multidiscipline involvement is important within mental health nursing as people with mental health problems have multiple needs, so a variety of expertise is required to meet the needs of these people (Darby et al 1999). Multidisciplinary mental health teams can been defined as: “A group of practitioners with different professional training, employed by more than one agency, who meet regularly to coordinate their work providing services to one or more clients in a defined area” (Ovretveit,1993: 9 cited in Onyett 2003) The advantage of a multidisciplinary team approach is that all professionals work together by collecting the facts and by bringing information together, to obtain as complete a view as possible of the problems of each individual patient.
FCA and Society and Health Essay Discuss experiences of health care and the factors that may influence patient satisfaction In this essay I am going to discuss the health care experiences that I have encountered since I have started medical school. This information has been gained through meeting regularly with my allocated patient whom has a chronic disease, patients I have met whilst on GP placement, people I have spoken to whilst conducting my survey and my own experiences. I will also consider factors which influence patient satisfaction. Since October I have been visiting a patient who has experienced a wide range of health care practices since being diagnosed with a chronic disease; dermatomyositis, interstitial lung disease and antisynthetase syndrome. I have chosen to reflect upon and evaluate her most recent NHS experience to illustrate satisfaction levels and influential factors relating to her unique experiences and expectations of the NHS system.
According to Meleis (2007) knowing includes knowledge based on observation, research findings (evidenced based), clinical manifestations and scientific approach. As a stroke nurse empirical knowing it’s very important in taking care of stroke patients. I determine patient’s neurological status by performing neuro checks frequently every 1-2 hrs as the patient’s condition might deteriorate the first 24hrs and perform swallow test to determine if the patient can swallow medications. Patient’s plan of care is based on assessment findings(vital signs, Glasgow coma score). If a patient is confused and very weak fall precaution is observed by activating the bed alarms, request for a PT/OT consult, if the patient does not pass the swallow test, a speech therapist is consulted. Sometimes patient’s neurological deficits get resolved after a few hours or days and that calls for change of treatment plan.
