HW6: Hirsch summary In the reading “Creating a Curriculum for the American People” by E.D Hirsch, Jr. emphases on his belief that America’s biggest educational problems can be separated in to three categories. First is our low academic achievement relative to other nations; second is our lack of equality of educational opportunity; third our failure to perpetuate a strong sense of loyalty to the national community and its civic institutions. In the excerpt, he lays out his case that a shared base of common knowledge is essential not just reading and comprehension but the functioning of democracy itself. Hirsch describes how the anti-curriculum movement, the dominant school of thought in education became “tragically and unintentionally” an anti-equality movement. A lack of knowledge, both civic and wide-ranging, is the most significant deficit in most American students’ education.

By which he argues that deviance and crime result from the inability of those in lower classes to achieve mainstream goals. It is useful for highlighting why, in the working class, those who cannot achieve in education, they then therefore suffer from status frustration and in this process turn to other people who also cannot achieve in this institution.
Holden explores the concept of relationships through the similar attitudes displayed towards popular society and his repulsion of their values. Primary Source Analysis: Biography of a Runaway Slave One of the most significant complications experienced when attempting to ascertain a historically accurate visual of an illiterate societal class is the scarcity of primary sources originating from within the aforementioned class, as is demonstrated in the cultural history of the Caribbean and its newfound inhabitants resulting from the African diaspora. Despite the interest in the tremulous proceedings of socioeconomic reform in the Caribbean from the late 18th to late 19th centuries maintained by many, an in-depth study of life under enslavement is always subject to bias, even blatant inaccuracy, when personally invested primary sources are used. This is perfectly understandable, due to anyone having experienced enslavement and therefore existing as a credible primary source inherently being an inevitably biased storyteller. Miguel Barnet’s Biography of a Runaway Slave is no different. Through an arduous, repetitive system of Q&A and interviews, an anthropologist/writer interested in Afro-Cuban religions interviewed a 103 year old illiterate former slave, known as Esteban Montejo, in 1963 in Cuba.
Jazz Appreciation According to Wikipedia: “The term "Uncle Tom" is used as a derogatory epithet for an excessively subservient person, particularly when that person perceives their own lower-class status based on race. It is similarly used to negatively describe a person who betrays their own group by participating in its oppression, whether or not they do so willingly. The popular negative connotation of "Uncle Tom" has largely been attributed to numerous derivative works inspired by Uncle Tom's Cabin in the decade after its release, rather than the original novel itself, whose title character is a more positive figure. These works lampooned and distorted the portrayal of Uncle Tom with politically loaded overtones.” The term does not always have a negative connotation. In the eyes of white supremacy it would be a negative, but in the eyes of the black race it meant a man who refused to obey the orders to beat other slaves and go against the racist norms.
Orwell’s perspective as a reluctant and disgusted colonizer shapes his essay’s development, detail and main thesis. The essay’s first-person narrative, causal analysis and the detail it employs obviously produce a powerful condemnation of British colonialism. However, while Orwell briefly lists the obvious abuses of colonialism---the torture of prisoners, the appalling conditions in imperial jails, the destruction of the colonized’s spirit---he focuses his essay’s detail and development on colonialism’s effects on himself as colonizer, how this system causes his degradation and corruption as a human being. He presents his younger self as tormented by his role in this system, but also as someone who has absorbed its racist attitudes. He emphasizes his “intolerable sense of guilt” (313), but also his contradictory hatred of the Burmese, those “evil-spirited little beasts” (314), as well as his callous disregard for the native man killed by the elephant (319).
The Great Gatsby may appear to be a simple tragic romance, however this may not have been the case had the aspect of social status not come into play. Social status, or class, played a large role in corrupting the original idea of the American Dream in the story of The Great Gatsby. With the goal to gain the attention from Daisy Buchanan and the East, Jay Gatsby experiences love, tragedy and moral struggle throughout the novel, resulting in the harsh reality that social class is distinguished by more than just wealth.
