COMM 110 Keith M. Brown Prof. Wendy Walters MALCOLM X Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha Nebraska. His parents were middleclass people who were involved in the church. His father, Earl Little was a Baptist minister, deeply involved as a civil rights activist and avid supporter of the Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. His mother was from the West Indies, born of mixed parentage. Her mother was black and her father was white. Malcolm has seven siblings of which he was number four. Although he grew up in poverty, he did not let his shortcomings outline his future. He kept his head held high and made the best out of a not so good situation. Following in the footsteps of his father, he became a commemorable civil rights activist, and a phenomenal speaker. Malcolm is commended for being an inspirational speaker. He was known for his ability to speak and get through to others. He is known for many famous quotes. The ones that stood out to me the most were: “Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world.” This quote influenced a lot of people, such as myself. This helped me to broaden my horizon and further my education. There was a movie made of the life of Malcolm X in 1992 and it received several Oscar nominations. Denzel Washington acted in the movie. It gave a lot of insight on how hard it was coming up as an African American. No matter what the situation, and how much you feel like you have been wronged, to never give up in what you believe in. Always hold your head high, and be proud of who you are. Malcolm X was one of many civil rights activist that did not believe in violence.
