Child worker When the industrial revolution first came to Britain and the U.S there was a very high demand of labour. Families quickly travelled to new industrialized cities to find work. To survive in even the lowest level of poverty, families had to have every able member of the family go to work. This led to the high rise in child labour in factories. Children were not treated well, overworked, and underpaid for a long time before someone decided that things have to change. Children as young as six years old during the industrial revolution worked hard hours for little pay or no pay. Children sometimes worked up to 19 hours a day, with only a one hour break. Not only were these children subjected to long hours, but also, they were in horrible conditions. Large, heavy, and dangerous equipment was very common for children to be using or working near. Many accidents occurred in the factories, in some extreme cases children could die from working the machines, breathing in poisons gases or being abused by higher management. The treatment of children in factories was often unpleasant and cruel, and the children’s safety was generally ignored. Both boys and girls who worked in factories were subject to beatings and other harsh forms of pain. It wasn’t till the factory act of 1833 did things start to improve. Technology and child labour. Technology helped shape and change the world. From jobs that where done with hand, technology changed the world and man-made machines. Machines were more efficient and could make more supply faster. As more and more people went to work in factories to operate machines. In later years people built machines to run other machines. This limited more jobs. Child labour was no longer needed and only adults had to work. This all didn’t happen overnight. It was a long time till there were rules and regulations about child labour.
