What makes a leader

970 Words4 Pages
A leader. What makes one? To me a leader is a person who can lead people under the heat and pressure of battle. People who can lead men and women of different races, religions, and creeds to what may seem to be their deaths and bring them out alive even in the face of the given adversity. This is what makes a leader to me. This is the kind of leader I want to be. I want to be a leader with the qualities like these, and the prime example of this type of leader is a military officer. Some people would disagree with me about the qualities of a proper leader. Some would say that a leader is someone who never gives up or someone who gives their current task their all. I can agree with all of these qualities, but a leader must be able to have more than just that one trait. A leader must have many traits that enable someone to lead. Person with just one of the many traits that make a leader is not a leader, a leader can’t just be some someone who never gives up, or never turns down a challenge. Those traits simply make a determined person. A leader must be a person of many traits like Nelson Mandela, Melba Colin Powell, and Melba Patillos and her bodyguard Danny. One of the nation and the world’s most admired leaders was Nelson Mandela. Mandela was a simple black man in South Africa during the years of Apartheid. Nelson Mandela was born in Qunu in the Transkei with his proper name Rolihlahla (www.famouspeople.co.uk/n/nelsonmandela.html). Mandela was the first member of his family to attend school and what given the name ‘Nelson’ by a Methodist teacher. After Mandela’s many years in school he became a political dissident of the South African Government which had recently instituted the policy of Apartheid. After Mandela and his colleges tried to protest the apartheid for many years Mandela became the commander of the African National Congress’s militant wing in 1961.
