Hardly a month goes by without a breathless news bulletin on some new hazard new in our lives. However, you can master the fine points of clean interior air, fire and disaster safety, and reasonable protection against break-ins and theft. Just take a little time to understand each household danger, what preventive measures to take, and what to do when an emergency does occur. Hazardous Household Products Thousands of products containing hazardous chemicals are routinely used and stored in households. Most accidents with these involve flammable and combustible materials. In addition to the risk of fire, these products also may be ingested by children. To a lesser extent, there are dangers associated with absorption of some substances through skin contact. Such chemicals don’t necessarily damage the skin, so the victim may not even be aware that they are being poisoned. Cancer, liver or kidney damage, birth defects, and central nervous system damage can result from repeated, long-term exposure, though the effects may take years to be apparent. Act cautiously around potentially dangerous products, which fall under the following categories: • Flammable/combustible: Can easily be set on fire. Examples: pain thinner, oil-based paints, some insect repellants, kerosene, hair sprays. • Explosive/reactive: Can detonate or explode through exposure to heat, sudden shock, pressure or incompatible substances. Examples: many aerosol spray cans, batteries and ammonia. • Corrosive: Their chemical action can burn and destroy living tissues. Examples: heavy-duty cleaners, paint strippers, drain cleaners, muriatic acid, oven cleaner, and toilet bowl cleaner. • Toxic: Capable of causing injury or death through
