Abstract Leadership has been described as a process of social influence. Mahatma Gandhi as a leader not only guided the masses in India, but inspired numerous leaders across the globe, as a leader of the people. Mahatma Gandhi stood for peace, love, unity, and acceptance. His attitude towards his enemies manifested both an enigma and a lesson. This paper gives a report that examines the outstanding qualities of leadership that Gandhi provided and helps review constituent components of his leadership to arrive at a better understanding of the qualities, characteristics, and effectiveness of leadership. Introduction The topic of leadership has been of interest for many years. Starting from the early Greek philosophers, such as Plato and Socrates, to the present class of leadership expert’s, leadership as a topic has been defined in various ways. Many have their own intuitive understanding of what leadership is, based on personal experiences and learning. Some people view leadership as the collection of ‘a leader’s’ qualities. Others view it as a social process that results from group relationship. According to leadership theory, the common themes in the way leadership is understood are; leadership is a process which involves influence; leadership occurs in a group context and leadership involves goal attainment (Northouse, 2004). Leadership has been described as a process of social influence. Here, one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task (Chemers, 1997). Moreover, a leader satisfies a role of common purpose, offering security and purpose to his/her followers. Lastly, leadership cannot survive without followership.
