How well does The Hobbit satisfy the Fantasy genre? The Hobbit, by JJR Tolkien, can be determined as a fantasy novel. In fantasy novels the author commonly uses the main character as the hero/heroine (sometimes unexpected) and is usually required to complete a quest or adventure. In The Hobbit the protagonist and hero, Bilbo Baggins is asked to embark on a formidable journey alongside Gandalf the Wizard and 13 dwarves. They are on a great quest to reclaim Thorin’s treasure from the immense and intimidating dragon, Smaug.
Sir Gawain is on a quest to prove himself as a knight. He is one of King Arthur’s knights and believes he is only there because he is Arthur’s nephew. The knight from the “Wife of Bath’s Tale”, however, is on a quest to save his life. Both men have the same time, a year and a day, to complete their quests. Both knights have things work out for them in the end.
Lancelot, for example, is on a constant quest for the Grail. He never achieves his goal, but he reaches a grander success: “[…] the point of a greater achievement than any he could have known…” (Williams). The Grail, which appeared in the New Testament of the Bible, is symbol of the virtue of purity and great achievement. With the search for the grail, a knight is able to develop a stronger foundation in themselves and their religion, which in turn brings a knight closer to God. It is undeniable that Christianity influenced the legend.

Fairies are fallen angels or the heathen dead, not evil enough for Hell, but not goof enough for Heaven, compelled to live forever in the twilight regions. Fairies are found among all branches of Celtic families. the Irish say that fairies live in the Pagan Sidh and have connections to the deadlands as well as to Heaven. Fairies are inhabited by female deities and are categorized and named according to their abode and dominion. These two stories, although very different content, have the same frame. Both heroes, although brave and heroic in their own ways, must rely on others in order to succeed. “Booze”, by Pinckney Benedict is a perfect example of a basic quest myth. While this story does not contain the glory, and the heroism as Beowulf, the protagonist carries out the responsibilities of a quest myth hero. The protagonist must find the courage to vanquish a beast that has burdened him since he was a young boy.
