Maebyeong is one of the Korean traditional vessels in Goryeo dynasty (918 – 1392). It is made in late 13th century with stoneware and inlaid decoration of cranes and clouds under celadon glaze; it is 11 1/2 inches high, it’s diameter is 7 1/8 inches and diameter of base is 4 3/8 inches. It has a small slightly curled mouthpart, short neck, round shoulder, and constricted waist. It is used to hold fine quality of alcohol such as Insam Ju and Maehwa Ju. Usually, Maebyeong has cover for keeping alcohol fresh and some Maebyeong has leaf of Insam on its surface. Maebyeong began to be made from 11st century in Goryeo dynasty and its golden age was 12nd century. It had been made through 13rd century, 14th century and 15th century and widely used. Especially, Cheong Ja, Baek Ja, Togi has similar style with Maebyeong. Maebyeong, which is famous for flowing and elegant line and graceful and beautiful figure, has changed in detail with the times and it shows Goryeo’s beauty especially through 12nd century’s Maebyeong. Maebyeong, which well represent Eumgak(Intaglio), Yanggak(emboss), Sanggam(marquetry), Cheolhoi, Jinsa(cinnabar) and Cheolchae and its large shoulder, small mouth alegant and graceful bodyline, had disappear in 15th century in Joseon dynasty because vessel’s shape changed to more circle shape and slim. Representative Maebyeongs are Cheongja Sanggam Wonhakmoon Maebyeong in Korean central museum, Cheongja Sanggam Jinsa Moranmoon Maebyeong, Chungja Eumgak Yeonhwa Danchomoon Maebyeong, Cheongja Cheolchae toihwa samyeobmoon Maebyeong and Baekja Maebyeong. This paper examines the Maebyeong was not only very useful vessel for holding good quality of alcohol in Goryeo dynasty, but also it represents Goryeo’s tradition, thought and science of the time.
