Macbeth and Banquo are two very important characters in the play. Now, both of these characters are introduced into the play in the same way; they are returning war heroes who have fought off Scotland’s enemies. However, when both Banquo and Macbeth are given prophecies by the three witches they react differently to these similar fates. This in turn brings in Banquo as the character foil to Macbeth. They both have various similarities and differences and these comparisons say a great deal about both of their characters.

The third witch says, ‘There to meet Macbeth’, this intertwining of Macbeth reflects the relationship which will be made between him and the witches, and the evil which is going to be involved in Macbeth’s life. The arrangement of meeting place shows their target for the forces of evil, and their thorough planning of making an appointment to lure Macbeth to destruction. This scene symbolises the witches as a representation for temptation, therefore foreshadowing Macbeth’s potential human weakness to be susceptible to temptation, before we are even introduced to Macbeth himself. Shakespeare presents Macbeths character as brave and fearless in Scene 2; without Macbeth being present. “Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’chaps and fixed his head upon our battlements”, this quotation is said by the captain, who is commending Macbeth for defeating the leader of the rebel army.

Wiglaf knows of the many triumphs Beowulf endeavors, and sees it as an encouragement. If Beowulf was able to defeat, why couldn't Wiglaf. Wiglaf is extremely brave to continue the fight Beowulf had started and kill the dragon as his loyalty shines through. Beowulf and Wiglaf are genuinely loyal characters in the epic poem. The two inferior men endeavored many hardships throughout because of their loyalty to others.
It is here where Gawain stands up to the challenge in order to protect his Uncle, King Arthur, from danger. He does this to get respect from the other knights. Gawain even goes as far as making himself sound like he is worth nothing compared to King Arthur as a way to make himself feel like he is going to do something amazing. “I am weakest of your warriors and feeblest of wit; / loss of my life would be grieved at least” (354-355). Because of this, the poem describes Gawain as this brave and heroic knight for going up against the Green Knight’s challenge, but in reality, Gawain is making a big scene to seem like he is a brave knight.
The play Macbeth has a broad thematic focus but I firmly believe that its central defining concern is the theme of evil. Consideration of this theme is essential to even the most basic understanding of the text and this is why I feel that the vision of evil presented throughout this play is indeed powerful and memorable. Essentially, there are two types of evil explored in this play, namely the evil inherent in humankind and supernatural evil. The violent imagery, language and occurrences described all combine to establish the overall atmosphere of evil in the play, while the characters of the three witches, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth and the apparitions all make the theme of evil a very real and tangible force at work in the play. In my opinion, the vision of evil in this play is powerfully presented through the characters of the witches.
