It does not help progress the story at all. And throughout his novel, he tells you dates for when the actions happened. However, he does not reveal the year until the end of the novel. The suspense of it was fine, but the problem was that he left the place out of the story. Taylor only gives cities and never gave away the state.
Nathanael’s literary style and theme of his stories were passionate romanticism and mainly dark romanticism. The spectacular author had many amazing works and so many popular books. One of his greatest works was The Scarlet Letter (1850) and Twice-Told Tales (1837). Edgar Allan Poe once said, "The style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective—wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes... We look upon him as one of the few men of indisputable genius to whom our country has as yet given birth".

So that when he does, he can understand the book better. That is one of the things that Their Eyes were Watching God lacked, making it a good story, but not a great book. One instance proven by Wright is when he says, “Turpin’s faults as a writer are those of an honest man trying desperately to say something; but Zora Neale Hurston lacks even that excuse. The sensory sweep of her novel carries no theme, no message, no thought”( ¶ #5). When he says there is “no thought” he means that there is nothing in the book that makes the reader think.
It is not an oversight that Curley’s wife, although a relatively minor character, was left nameless in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. She is not in the story as someone to relate to, and by giving her a name, it would bring more similarity to the reader. Her status also has to do with this. She is not regarded as anything significant, therefore she does not need a name. Steinbeck leaves her unnamed so she lacks something that makes her appear as an equal individual.
it is never clear why Lucy is Lewis’s girlfriend as the play does not show us any affection between the two of them. Lewis himself seems uncommitted to the relationship when Doug asks him if he plans to marry Lucy, Lewis says “who knows” and when he kisses Julie his behaviour shows a lack of
