Factors Associated with Hand Hygiene Compliance at a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital. Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, 34(11), 1146. doi:10.1086/673465 | Background Information | The stated purpose of the article was to identify factors associated with hand hygiene conformity. As stated by Kowitt (2013) hand hygiene is considered the most important measure in preventing hospital-acquired infections which in 2004 related to about 99,000 deaths, affecting 1.7 million patients with a cost of $6.5 billion to the healthcare system. In the abstract, it is stated that these factors were tracked over four years and involved over 161,526 observations of hand hygiene compliance. This initiative was to see if factors are reliable in increasing compliance rates among all categories of hospital workers.
Heather’s WBC count was at 18,000 WBC/µL. How do the results obtained from the spinal tap rule out viral encephalitis? Diplococci was present in the CSF and this is a common result if the patient has bacterial meningitis. If the patient
Cystic Fibrosis Heather Province Southwest Florida College Anatomy & Physiology August 30, 2012 Margaret Forget Cystic Fibrosis What is Cystic Fibrosis and what it means to me personally? This disease is a lethal genetic disease that’s common in the white population. Many patients with this disease live till 37 years old due to better treatment to improve their survival rate. “Average Life Expectancy in Cystic Fibrosis Better Treatment=Improved Survival” (Source: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). Throughout my research I will explain treatments, therapy options, and prescription drugs offered to patients with this disease.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), issued recommendations to researcher for planning and designing studies for the development of drugs that treat the side effects associated with smallpox vaccines. “The forty page guidance document from the FDA makes recommendations for nonclinical early drug development studies with section on chemistry, manufacturing and controls, toxicology, microbiology and clinical pharmacology. The guidance focuses on the need for accruing in vivo investigation data from animal models because of the low occurrence of serious vaccine complication in the vaccinated population. It also includes sections on obtaining data regarding human efficacy and safety, designing clinical trials, and data collection requirements and recommendations” (Tolchin 25). It tells that our government is planning to teach people about this deadly disease.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus HCA/240 Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph bacteria that, as the name suggests, is resistant to a type of antibiotics called beta-lactams. Some examples of these types of antibiotics are methicillin, oxacillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin (Definition of MRSA, 2010). This paper will discuss several aspects of MRSA including: the inflammatory response, transmission and risk factors, treatments, controlling the spread of this disease, and strategies for prevention. MRSA is not a name that many people recognize instantly like the flu or chickenpox, but it is one that once a person experiences it, they will never
Solubility and Conductivity Introduction Solubility by definition means “the quality or property of being soluble; relative capability of being dissolved” and in chemistry this tells us whether or not a substance is dissolvable, but in the medical field it can mean you have a homeostatic imbalance (Webster, 2010). They use “a screening test for sickle cell hemoglobin (Hb S), which is reduced by dithionite and is insoluble in concentrated inorganic buffer; addition of blood showing Hb S to buffer and dithionite causes opacity of the solution” (Solubility, 2012). This is just one of many uses of solubility in the medical field. Conductivity by dictionary definition is “Physics. The property or power of conducting heat, electricity, or sound” and is used as such in chemistry (Dictionary, 2014).
The AETC have established the SoP for ENPs around the model of care (MOC) (Lowe 2010 p) that was based upon the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) cited in the Alfred Health website (2012). The areas in the SoP involve prescribing medications, ordering tests, diagnosing results and admitting and discharging patients (Lowe 2010 p). The assessment of minor injuries or illnesses and initiation of treatments are also part of the ENP’s SoP (Lowe 2010 p). Lastly required at the AETC the ENP must also attend educational classes with other ED medical staff, and further additional classes that will identify the gaps between the ENP’s skill and knowledge and own professional development (Lowe 2010 p80). In comparison, Fry’s research (2011, p58) indicated that the NP in the critical care department (CCD) have separated areas which are adult, paediatric and neonate, however all three areas can fall under the same SoP.
Unit 4222-616 Administer medication to individuals and monitor the effects Outcome 1 1) Identify current legislation, guidelines policies and protocols relevant to the administration of medication. Legislations, policies and protocols that are relevant to the administration of medication include the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH, the Medicines Act, the Misuse of Drugs Act, the Health and Social Care Act. Outcome 2 1) Describe common types of medication including their effects and potential side effects. Aspirin - relieves minor aches and pains. Reduces fever and is an anti inflammatory.
