M1 :Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual In this assignment I will be discussing the nature- nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual. The nature- nurture debate has been around for many centuries which argues about the role of heredity and environment in human development. The nature – nurture debate is concerned with particular aspects of behaviour which are believed to be either a product of inherited or learned characteristics. Some philosophers and theorists have argued that we are just born to be the way we are. Whereas other theorists have argued that is is the way we are brought up and influenced by our surroundings that makes an individual the way they are. Nature means the genetic and biological influences that affect our growth and development. The nature side of the debate believes that it is inherited factors which have more impact on your life and development. For example, the colour or type of your hair, your eye colour, the pigmentation of your skin, and also genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis are all the result of the genes we inherit. These biological factors are said to determine an individual’s development and characteristics . the ability to speak a first language are thought to be due to an in progress genetic inheritance. Genes provide the instructions for structuring amino acids which in turn influence the proteins within our body cells. Genes process the chemical basis of our biology. Depending on the genes we inherit and the environmental influences we are exposed to, we will act apon a situation differently. This is what makes us human. In the maturation theory, some aspects of development such as the ability to speak a language are thought to be due to an inbuilt process. As children are born and start to grow and develop, they see different things
