As Stoller himself says, the music comes with stories that the audience holds – it is this reason that the book versions of the Leiber-Stoller musicals were absolute flops: no one has even heard of them. I echo Stoller’s sentiments, whereby the music speaks for itself. It is the unadulterated euphoria of listening to a song and reliving one’s own experiences. Dramatizing these songs provides the audience the capacity to dictate the circumstances of the music, of the song, of the scenes on stage. This is why it holds the record for the longest running revue on Broadway, and why it is continuously revived all over America.

The movie and the book Fight Club explore many of the same themes, such as existentialism, anti-materialism, anarchist literature, romantic love story, and is also a commentary on a lost generation. The story is a criticism of the American consumer society that has cloned individuals to resemble each other’s identity. The main character is introduced to the audience without a name, comes to us without a clear identity because he represents any man, any males living in our society.
One example of bad criticism is from Infinity Book Reviews. Josh Barkman states, “ I really didn’t like the concept the author used for this series. He used the society’s (more specifically, the youth’s) desires to fit into their concept for ideal beauty, and created a world wherein turning “Pretty” was the ultimate achievement that can be attained in life. In this world, all of the “Uglies” undergo an operation when they come of age and turn into party-freak “Pretties” my feel is it down right degrading as a human being.” The reviewer shows he doesn’t like the way Westerfeld writes the novel by taking the concept of girl’s self-conscience and making a huge twist on it. Another bad critique of Uglies is from Imaginary Books.
By use of details, symbols, disruption of space, and adapting a famous quote, Banksy is able to convey his point that Wall Street does not care about normal people in America and were the cause of the crisis. Banksy is a world famous graffiti artist from Bristol, England. Along with being the most famous street artist alive, he is also one of the most secretive. He is thought to be 34-year-old Robin Gunningham but that has neither been confirmed nor denied by Banksy or his representatives. (Joseph) Nothing has been proven, which adds to the mystery of his persona.
Specifically, one will read of how music is a powerful tool of rhetoric that has been used as protest, as a means of raising awareness and of uniting a group of people. Music is persuasive through the use of ethos, pathos and logos and the research involved clearly outlines just how this is done. When any intelligent person is asked about systems of communication or mass media, a few staple mediums come to mind; television, magazines, newspapers, radio. But what do these mediums actually do? In simplest of terms, these mediums provide us with information.
What has the power to make you get up and move? Rock, rap, pop, country, and blues are all forms of this phenomenon we call music. Music has been a part of each and every one of our lives. Both rock and pop can be considered movements in society; however, the motivations for these movements were on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Also another thing that they have in common is that once the artists are famous they may both have a tendency to fall off the deep end.
Music has been used to bring people together, to influence people, and to even cure a conflict. The Vietnam War is an era which best exemplifies this power of music. In the eyes of many, the Vietnam War was one that should never have been fought; yet it ushered in one of the most aspiring eras of music in American history. Music may have been influential in American culture before the Vietnam War, but this event triggered the most significant musical revolution in the young country’s history because not only was music used as a means of protest and propaganda on the home front, but soldiers abroad also used it for everything from military strategy to moral support. The art form of music influenced the culture of the Vietnam War era more than most musical eras have ever impacted their respective cultures.
Most popular music nowadays does not promote anything important or resourceful. In a reference to ‘rap’ music, the song, ‘turn my swag on’, Soulja Boy, is a prime example of unimportant music. The song touches upon being ‘fly’ and having a lot of money. Rapper, Professor D, expresses shock at the number of rappers wasting exposure and talent by rapping about things that’s socially irrelevant. On a contrary, they can be doing the exact opposite, (Bottero, 2008,p8).
Music influences my life in so many ways. No matter what mood I am in, I always listen to music because it cheers me up and makes me happy. As a musician, I can truly relate to music because I listen to different styles of music for the different styles of music that I perform. Music has a huge effect on me and I could not imagine not having music in my life. The media influences the way I feel about music in a negative way.
