Lymphatic Diseases Nathan Ortgiesen Creek Wood High School Abstract Lymphatic Diseases are diseases of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system carries a clear fluid called lymph undirectionally toward the heart. The diseases in this system can cause fluid building up in parts of the body. When the lymphatic system fails to function because of disease pathogens get into the fluids of the body and make people sick. The lymphatic system can also cause cancer to spread. Lymphatic diseases generally do not cause death to someone but do cause great pain discomfort and swelling. Diseases like Lymphadema obstruct vessels that drain fluid from the tissues through the body and block immune cells from where they need to go. Castleman’s Disease causes tumors to spread throughout the body which are overgrown lymphocytes. Lymphatic diseases cause pain and swelling to people who are afflicted with them. These diseases are caused by surgery, genetics, viruses, and parasites. The properly functioning lymphatic system drains fluids from the body and allows proper flow of the body. When getting one of these diseases or syndromes the fluid in the body called lymph can become stopped up and will fill the blocked area. Normally, the lymph would go to a lymph node and the node would kill off disease causing bacteria. The survival rates of people with lymphatic diseases are over twice as high compared to the 1960’s. Lymphatic cancer survival rates are also much higher. Lymphomas are cancers of the lymph nodes and lymphatic tissues that make up the lymphatic system. This system produces cells that fight diseases in your body called lymphocytes. A type of lymphoma called Hodgkin's disease along with at least 10 other types of lymphoma cause around 50,000 lymphoma cases around the world each year.
