The LS9 Engine A Thing of Beauty I did my report on the LS9 engine, because this is the engine found in the 2012 corvette ZR1. This just happens to be my favorite car. As far as I could figure this engine only appears in the 2012 ZR1. The supercharged 6.2L LS9 V8 is the most powerful automotive production engine ever manufactured by General Motors. In fact the Corvette ZR1 will be the most powerful and fastest production car ever produced by GM. It is hand-built and tested. The LS9 gets a six-speed manual transmission with race hardened gears and dual-disc clutch technology which is not offered in any other model. The aluminum and magnesium frame of the current generation forms the basis of the new model. The LS9 features an LS9 block that is equipped with billet main caps and already machined for piston squirters. The block alloy is 317. LS9 cylinder heads are rotocast, have a more robust casting design, thicker deck surfaces, and 356-T6 aluminum alloy – which is the same as the C5-R.The head studs are 12mm. They used to be 11mm. The valves are titanium with a 2.16 intakes and hollow stainless steel sodium filled 1.59″ exhaust. The cylinder heads also feature bronze valve guides and proprietary processes during the assembly process that reduce valve guide wear. Cylinder heads are CNC ported in the intake and exhaust runner. Apparently the “swirl-inducing fin” in the intake port was eliminated. The rotating assembly is outfitted with a forged 4340 steel crank, steel H-beam connecting rods, and a 13.0:1 compression ratio. It also has 2618 alloy hardcoat anodized pistons with Diamond-Like-Carbon coated pins. The valvetrain is equipped with high speed lifters, and a specialized camshaft just for this engine. Also there is a C5-R timing chain, Trend pushrods, and LS9 stock rocker arms. The induction system is a “FAST LSXR 102mm LS3 intake” with Katech billet fuel
