Licensed Professional Therapist October 24, 2010 Abstract The field of Psychology as we know it, or at least as we have learned in the past 7 weeks of this course, is one of many sub-fields. I chose to interview Tracy Bru, LPC, because initially I thought she was a LMFT, which was the field that I thought I wanted to go into, but later I learned of her true job title as a Licensed Professional Therapist. Going into the interview, I thought that I had everything figured out, and that although there would be complex issues I would have to face by going on to pursue my graduate studies, I really had no idea of what would really be required of me. What recommendations would you make to someone coming into the field? What direction would you point them in for better preparation of the professional world, and what would you advise them to not worry so much about? Being able to know your own limitations will help you in setting the limit for what you can handle. Being able to leave the work at the office and to not feel a personal bond with your clients helps to keep things in perspective, because they are not your friends, and keeping it at a professional level always makes the job a bit easier and your career that much more successful (personal communication, Oct. 21, 2010). 6. How useful were organizations such as the APA and ACA as you were preparing for entry into the professional world or being a counselor as well as since then? Joining any of the organizations are not a requirement, it’s more for the prestige of being a part of it all. Being able to seek help or being able to vent to another professional would serve to be just as useful if not more as these organizations.
