River God The setting is placed in Ancient Egypt under the reign of Pharaoh Mamose. Under him was his grand vizier, Lord Intef. Lord Intef had a daughter named Lostris. He also had a slave named Taita. Taita was no ordinary slave. He was smart, talented, and trust worthy. Just the type of slave Lord Intef needed. Taita and Lostris spent many hours, days, and weeks together in Lostris early life. Taita loved Lostris like his own, but Lostris loved one person more than any other; Tanus. Tanus was a strong and tall army man. He also loved Lostris with all his heart. During the Festival of Osiris Taita rewrote an ancient pageant. The pageant surprised many people including Pharaoh Mamose. Pharaoh was so impressed he made Taita’s version the new and official pageant. Since Tanus had killed someone in the pageant they accused him of murder. Unless he could kill all of the Shrikes within the next two years he would be killed. If he killed all of the Shrikes that terrorized Upper Egypt he would be spared. On the last day of the Festival of Osiris Pharaoh Mamose made a strange announcement. He wanted Lostris to be his wife. It was a great mix of historic, and a thrilling book. Wilbur Smith did a good job of his descriptions and imagery. The English in the book was not to difficult, there were some difficult words but not too many where I had to grab a dictionary. It took me about 20-30 pages to get into the book. I did not like the last half of the book as much as I liked the first. I also at times got confused with how Smith wrote Taita narrating. At times he was speaking in the present and at other times he was speaking in the future. I would recommend the book but, for older ages. I think you have to be at least in high school, get a parent okay on the book, be mature about the subjects in the book, and have some knowledge on Ancient
