Homosexual Males in Low Socioeconomic Status Annie Williams Diversity and Oppression in the Social Work Context (SWG 533) October 12, 2012 Introduction Society chooses to see homosexual males as femenine, which is the predominant portrayal from the dominant culture. Due to this stereotype, it might be difficult for them to obtain certain jobs. Homosexual males are thought to be delicate and artistic. It is a common misconception that the majority of jobs that are held by homosexual males are in design or domestic in nature. This is how society and the media choose to view the homosexual community. It is a fairly new topic and homosexuality did not become recognized as a non-psychiatric disorder by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual III- R, until 1973. Four themes emerged from the analysis including: “Constructing and Internalizing a Global Self-Identity”, “Constructing and Internalizing a Homosexual Identity”, “Internalized Wealthism”, and “Reflections on Wealth and Homosexuality” (Hokemeyer, 2010, p. 140-141). The participants experienced “internalized wealthism; which is defined as directing society and culture’s bigotry toward people of wealth inward towards themselves” (Hokemeyer, 2010, p. 5). It is probable that the opposite is true of wealthism, in that Low-SES homosexual males turn inward as well. It could be speculated that Low-SES homosexual males experience internalized poverty, in which they are unable to react to their situation in a healthy manner, so they experience it inwardly without comfort from others. The research also extends the concept of the “double closet” in which the participants actually felt more conformable with their identity as homosexual males versus wealthy males (Hokemeyer, 2009). It would be interesting to find out if Low-SES homosexual males also identify more with being homosexual or being poor. Does being homosexual keep them from achieving all of their goals emotionally, personally and professionally? As is well known, problem of violence against homosexuals is so pervasive that they were a specifically identified group when the United States Congress ordered
