Money and material things do not truly satisfy a person's life or make a person happy. Tom Walker had all the money in the world and he was still a stingy cheap miserable old man. Not thinking through choices in life can cause a lifetime of regret and Tom Walker is a great example of someone whose life was ruined by his bad choices. The sad part of this story is by the time he fully understands that his choices were wrong it was too late. He didn’t think about those choices in his earlier years when he was robbing people blind.
In the end, however, it is seen in both novels that when you let yourself succumb to poor moral judgement, you will certainly be doomed. Monetary values and poor moral judgement leads to corruption in both The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Macbeth. Money and social recognition prove their infectious, harmful nature in both novels. Duddy places a large importance on money for his entire life. His core belief throughout his whole life is “A man without land is nothing (2)”.
On the other hand, there were many differences between Tom and Bernie. One important different is that Tom was a usurer; he gave people money for his own profit. He landed people money in a high interest, so high that they couldn’t pay back the money. But, Bernie did the opposite of Tom; he collected money from the people, and made them believe that they would be paid back in a high interest. The Devil which is a parallel to money is a motif so people such that in Tom's position, will borrow money from him. The Devil has essentially converted Tom into his spawn, as he is doing the same thing the Devil once did to him. The greed and money ultimately resulted in his death, and Tom's userer subjects led the end of their lives because of the debt they had to pay. The subjects indulged in the thought of free money, easily accessible money, ruining their lives, which is what the 'Devil' quiescently did to Tom Walker. Human beings are contemptuous gluttons, constantly desiring for additional possessions.
