Love and Infatuation What is love? By definition it is an intense feeling of deep affection. Love often times can be mistaken for infatuation. Infatuation is a foolish, unreasoning, or extravagant passion or attraction. “I love you” is a very commonly misused phrase in today’s youth. This happens because of the misconception about love and infatuation. Although there are few similarities between them they differ in many other ways. Love differs from infatuation because love is blind; meaning that it is not affected by physical attraction of looks. It is based upon an intense affection for another person. This can also be called interpersonal love. Infatuation is a wasteful passion and mostly based on physical appearance. Love provides a feeling of comfort and trust; infatuation being based mostly on sexual desire. Feelings inspired by love are also differing from infatuation. Love grants you a feeling of security. It makes the person feel that there is someone who cares and love them. Love is related with a strong bonding of souls. A person in love will always put their partner’s best interest first. Someone who is infatuated may often times become upset and selfish if their demands are not being met. Love and infatuation are different in the way they affect relationships. Pure love between two people can develop into a long term commitment and the relation goes on to marriage. On the other hand, infatuation doesn’t make one feel committed to the other person and marriage will not be important. Relations with someone that you love become stronger over to whereas, infatuation weakens the relationship with time. Although, separation is difficult in both emotions but infatuation may get weak and reduce over time. Infatuation can often be mistaken for love.
