Love Relationships between people have extremely various meanings. Two lovers can become best friends, for they share good communication, they share their laughs and even tears. However, in some occasions it is the other way around with tears, anger, disappointment, betrayal, and broken hearts. A relationship can be suffered from the misunderstanding, lack of communication, and a feeling of distance between two people. “A Temporary Matter” and “This Blessed House” in the book Interpreter of Maladies written by Jhumpa Lahiri, shows how love can differ. These stories are both similar in the way that they are about married couples finding out who each other really are. One of the most important things that can build a strong relationship is when the two people understand each other. When one person of a couple knows exactly what the other thinks or wants, they can have good communication in which they are always honest to each other. In “A Temporary Matter”, Shoba and Shukumar have been struggling with their marriage after the loss of their child. The couple faces grief of their stillbirth child and succeeds in avoiding each other. “Instead he thought of how he and Shoba had become experts at avoiding each other in their three-bedroom house, spending as much time on separate floors as possible”(Lahiri 4). They go to work earlier and come back home later. Shoba even brings home extra work to keep her busy during evenings and weekends. Meanwhile, Shukumar stays on his computer and pretends to work on his dissertation in the nursery room from which he knows that Shoba will stay away. Shoba and Shukumar are lacking in communication. The couple ignores the situation rather than facing what happened to their baby. Similar to “A Temporary Matter,” “This Blessed House” lacks in communication skills.
