Unesco Research Paper: Los Katios National Park With the human population continuously growing, it is no wonder the list of endangered animals and plants to continue to grow as well. Since these animals and plants are endangered, so too are their natural habitats. The United Nations created an agency to educate and communicate cultural diversity awareness, to promote peace. This agency is called the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO adds locations around the world to their list of World Heritage sites. Colombia has a total of 7 World Heritage sites. Five are cultural sites and two are natural sites. (http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/co) Los Katios National Park is one of those two natural sites. Los Katios National Park was added to the World Heritage List to help preserve the unique and diverse fauna and flora that inhabit the park. Colombia is the third most populated nation in Latin America and with its population on the rise, certain measures are needed to make sure Los Katios Park is not overrun and destroyed.( http://www.mapsofworld.com/colombia/information/population.html) Los Katios National Park covers over 72,000 ha in northwestern Colombia, and shares a border with Darien National Park located in Panama. Los Katios is comprised of mountainous terrain along with a lowland floodplain. According to the Encyclopedia of Earth, “…the mountains of the Serranía del Darién in the west accounting for 53% of the park, and in the east the floodplain of the Atrato River making up 47%.” (http://www.eoearth.org/article/Los_Kat%C3%ADos_National_Park,_Colombia) The vegetation of Los Katios consists of lowland swamp forests as well as mountainous tropical rainforest.
