Lord of the Flies vs. Kid Nation

Bryce Martinez English 10 4th Hour 10/20/12 Kid Nation vs. Lord of the Flies When left alone people lose their minds when they do not have something to keep them sane, they get frantic and out of control. Children on the other hand are even worse than adults as demonstrated in the novel Lord of the Flies as well as the television series Kid Nation where children are forced to create a working society all on their own. Kid Nation is directed by J. Rupert Thompson and contains the events of 40 children ranging from the ages of 8-15 which are thrown into Bonanza city where they are forced to overcome many challenges with only the help of a small town council. Lord of the Flies takes place during a war where a bunch of children ranging from the ages 6-12 crash land onto and Island where all they have is each other and pure chaos. The modern day television series and the novel from the early 1900’s have major difference but also similarities; Kid Nation is just not on as an extreme level as Lord of the Flies in regards of uncivilization, cruelty, and solitude. On the island the boys have major instances where they are becoming uncivilized apposed from the kids on Kid Nation. The boys on the island start painting their faces like Indian hunters just before the dance around the fire uncontrollably (Golding 123). This example from the Lord of the Flies shows how the boys are completely lost from civilization. Kid Nation has children that demonstrate uncivilized acts such as putting graffiti on each other’s building which they wouldn’t normally do in the real world (TV). These are two extreme examples from each Kid Nation and Lord of the Flies where there is a clear difference between the severities in Lord of the Flies where the children run free. There are instances in each the novel and the television series in which cruelty concerning death is
