Stare at the painting for a moment, I suddenly understand that nature always has two faces. On the left side, we have a peaceful nature where green evergreen trees grow straight up, a beautiful yellow beach, and some Indians people are trying to prepare their canoes. Up on the sky, the Sun is being blocked by clouds; still, the source of light is trying to lead its shining rays to the beach – creating a mysterious picture of a cascade descending on a mountain in the background. Nevertheless, on the right side is a total different face of nature – a violent storm coming toward the peaceful beach. The ocean, with its rough waves, is pounding the shore, where some Indians are struggling to pull their canoes out of the violent water; in addition, dark clouds have already half covered the right sky, blocking the sun’s lights wherever they can reach.
A passing by ship sees the smoke and the boys are finally rescued. Now, in the movie Madagascar, Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria are put on a boat to be shipped to Africa. When Marty and Alex start to argue, they all fall off of the boat and wash up onto an island. They search the island and come across a lot of lemurs. The lemurs feed them only once, which is not satisfying to Alex at all!
"The grasses sway their tall spears; the white butterflies flutter around and float on the warm wind of the late summer." (pg 9) As the quote seems to imply, it is showing the current mood and state of Paul which, in context is a peaceful and tranquil one. It also shows his innocence to the horrors of war. The butterflies also serve as a message of his softness towards his situation and the delicacy of the balance in life. There is another passage in the book when Paul describes the butterflies as being perched upon a skull and fly about the battlefield as if they do not have a care in the world.
This is exactly what happened to the boys in Lord of the Flies. Ralph, Piggy, Jack and the other stranded students find themselves on a deserted island. When kids got to the deserted island after the plane crashed they had to survive without adult help. In the civilization vs. savagery allegory Ralph is part of civilization. He represents reason and leadership.
The modern day television series and the novel from the early 1900’s have major difference but also similarities; Kid Nation is just not on as an extreme level as Lord of the Flies in regards of uncivilization, cruelty, and solitude. On the island the boys have major instances where they are becoming uncivilized apposed from the kids on Kid Nation. The boys on the island start painting their faces like Indian hunters just before the dance around the fire uncontrollably (Golding 123). This example from the Lord of the Flies shows how the boys are completely lost from civilization. Kid Nation has children that demonstrate uncivilized acts such as putting graffiti on each other’s building which they wouldn’t normally do in the real world (TV).
Sand crept into Turner’s size 10 black loafers as he knelt over the body to examine the strangulation markings on the victim’s neck. This body was the fourth in as many weeks that had washed up on the shores of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Although it was a bright, sunny day, apart from the flock of seagulls that had formed around the body, Turner and Lindsey were the only two living things on the beach. As Turner examined a stab wound located between the victim’s 3rd and 4th rib, he noticed that Lindsey was avoiding making eye contact with the body, and the paleness in his face rivaled that of the victim. “What’s the matter with you?
2/6/10 English 9 Honors Lord of the Flies Thesis The Truth In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies a group of school boys from England are stranded on a deserted island where they learn about the evil of man’s heart. Simon, although very shy, is the symbol of light and truth, a Christ- figure. Even though he has a medical condition involving periodic fainting, he gives the others hope in the darkest of times and always tells the truth. Simon overcomes many terrors while on the island, but the things he cannot conquer is his periodic fainting, shyness, and the perceptions the others have about him. Simon is asked if he believes in the beast at the meeting that was called after Samneric see the beast: “You, Simon?
The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, says nothing, with no time for even a grunt, traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. Many mistakes were made when Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and the rest of the boys were stranded on the island, Piggy’s death is one of those mistakes. The boys allowed many things to go wrong while they were stranded on that island. For example, they didn’t have a well thought out system for the leadership roles on the island.
In their absence, the mind corrodes from a state of civility to a blood-thirsty hell. In conclusion, multiple characters in Lord of the Flies by William Golding prove that the satanic forces that compel the shocking events on the island come from within the human psyche rather than from a supernatural realm in mythology. Golding employs a religious reference ,the Id, the instinct that governs the individual's sense of survival, is by nature evil in its selfish pursuit of its own goals. Golding uses the novel to demonstrate the progression of the mind towards savagery once the order of society is
Disasters such as a hurricane cause them to become the floating islands described. Hurled into the ocean, the mangroves become floating things. They even call attention to thinkers and musicians, amazing them with the way they float and how they move, resembling “dancers”. A tree cannot live on salt, and therefore, mangroves exclude salt from their intake. If you lick a mangrove leaf, you will scrunch up your face
