YEAR 11 PDHPE TASK NO. 2 BODY IN MOTION MOVEMENT SKILL CHOSEN: Long Jump Long jump is a track and field event in which athlete combines speed and strength to run along a runway and spring into the air from a point called the take-off board, with the aim of covering the greatest possible distance. 1a. Break the skill into major parts. Use diagrams to demonstrate the movements performed in each section: In long jump, there are four main parts or phases which need to be achieved in order to successfully carry out the skill. This could be broken down into the following sections; * The approach run up * The take off * The flight through air, and * The Landing These phases are shown in the diagrams below The landing Flight through air Approach run up Take off Age | Strides | Under 11 | 11 | Under 13 | 13 | Under 15 | 15 | Under 17 | 17 | Over 17 | 21 | The Approach Run-Up is the part where the athlete is running up/approaching the line where the take off jump occurs. The aim of the approach run-up for long jump is to generate the maximum amount of speed which can be converted effectively into a jump. The acceleration of the approach should be gradual, rhythmic, and steady. An uncontrolled sprint into the take-off results in a poor jump. Rhythm in the approach run is important to make sure the ideal speed is achieved at take off and accuracy in hitting the take off board. The length of the run will depend on the athlete's age and speed. An The purpose of The Take-Off is to create a vertical impulse through the athlete's centre of gravity while keeping balance and control. This phase is one of the most complex parts of long jump. While concentrating on foot placement, the athlete must also maintain proper body position, keeping the torso upright and moving the hips forward and up to achieve the greatest jumping
