Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is an ongoing, continuous process that evolves over time. Some couples have to separate during this process due to numerous factors involving: leaving for college, job, or family reasons. This leads us to our topic of interest- Long Distance Relationships. Through these interpersonal relationships we will investigate their rate of success and guidelines that can help keep these relationships ongoing. As we have understood from class, a relationship can gain depth and significance over course of time, yet also decline in quality and quantity over time. Since relationships are dynamic, they don’t stay the same but continually change just as we do. Joe Tracy, the publisher of Online Dating Magazine, wrote an article Making Long Distance Relationships Work. He does admit through his research that these relationships usually end up eventually broken up, but proclaims that through adequate communication and setting parameters, they can work He systematically uses ten tips to help achieve a successful long distance relationship. They are: 1. Establish Relationship Rules and Parameters- According to Dr. Greg Guldner, seventy percent of couples that did not set specific guidelines and parameters did not have a lasting relationship past six months. 2. Communicate Every Single Day- As technology has become overwhelming with methods of communication, including; internet, phone, Skype, Myspace, etc, studies show that this is a very important tool for keeping a successful long distance relationship. 3. Express Your Feelings- This is important because it shows “reassurance” to your partner about your commitment to him/her of making the relationship work. 4. Send Care Packages- The more personalized and creative your care package, the more meaningful they are for your partner. These could include
