India is growing rapidly. Developing rapidly. Year after year we see new trends in our culture. Changes in our practices have become extremely commonplace. The land of customs, religions and traditions is evolving as does a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Changes in our laws, our systems and our outlook is helping our country progress. However, of course change is a process which is never easy. Change often signifies an imbalance or a way that people aren’t accustomed to. In a country like ours where most of the population is of a conservative mindset, change, especially in the social scenario is fraught with obstacles. Many new practices often come under the scanner for being too forward or too against the grain of our culture or even just because they are too western. One such topic of heated discussion across the country is the concept of “live-in relationships”. So what exactly is a live in relationship? The legal definition of a live in relationship is “an arrangement of living under which the couples which are unmarried live together to conduct a long-going relationship similarly as in marriage.” It can also refer to an arrangement whereby two people decide to live together on a long term or permanent basis in an emotionally and/or sexually intimate relationship. The term is most frequently applied to couples who are not married. This in simple terms means two individuals who are not related in any way staying under the same roof and living like they are married minus the contractual obligations. Marriage and live in relationships differ from each other. A marriage is governed by a separate set of laws in all countries which safeguards the interests of both parties who enter into the union. Live-in relationships on the other hand have not been recognized by the law. There are no such safe guards in place to govern the workings of a live in
