Little Girl Dreams Big Girl Goals
As a little girl I often dreamed of working as a nurse. There were no concrete plans just dreams of wearing a white uniform with cap in place. To a child, caring for the sick seemed to be an honorable purpose in life. As any other child, I thought one day I would just be a nurse only to discover when I was older it would take so much more than the dream. Simply to make someone feel better was the dream that began the map of my life, my goals, and my purpose. Through the mapping out of the goal that was once a dream, success has been my reward many times over. Over the years that one goal as evolved into lifelong aspirations I will discuss in this paper. As with any goal no matter how big or small with proper planning it can be achieved.
Professional Goals
Peale (2003) stated, “All successful people have a goal. No one can get anywhere unless he knows where he wants to go and what he wants to be or do” (p. 94). At a very young age I knew who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. What I lacked was a plan. As I grew older it became very clear that I needed to set down on paper a plan to meet these goals. Every nurse graduates from school as the same generic nurse. Once out in the field, nurses are introduced to a variety of nursing arenas. At some point nurses will have an experience with a specific area of nursing and begin to grow a real passion, thus as they say, we have found our niche`. My passion is Risk Management, which encompasses a variety of areas including but not limited to quality of care, patient safety, and facility liability. This introduction to Risk Management breathed new life into my nursing career and was the very beginning of new goals and plans.
