AP English Language and Composition Summer Reading Instructions The mandatory summer reading for AP English Language and Composition is based on the 2003 book by Thomas C. Foster entitled How to Read Literature Like a Professor (ISBN: 006000942X). Students are responsible for securing a copy of the book on their own. It can easily be purchased online or at a local bookstore, but sharing amongst peers is encouraged. Students should read the book in its entirety, and then complete the assignment outlined below. It is imperative that both parts of the assignment be completed by each AP Lang student and turned in to Mrs. Rickard on the first day of school.

After the reading lesson, students will write two RAFTs in the style of the times to show their War Times to the Present: understanding. In this lesson, students will read and analyze literary devices used in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death." They will read the first part of the story with support and modeling from the teacher, the next part in small Creating Suspense Lesson 1: groups, and the final section on their own. Action Reading Program Debra Woods Phonics Based Reading & Decoding EDU 371 Instructor: Sandra Harley September 14, 2011 Action Reading Program Action Reading program is a phonics-based program designed to assist teachers with effective methods of reading instruction. The purpose of this program is to allow students or adults a way to enhance their skills of reading. The idea behind this program is to help develop a passion of reading. I am a student at Ashford University, and currently I am taking a class called Phonics Based Reading and Decoding. This course had provided me with the opportunity to teach this program effectively to students within five weeks.
Looking back on my English experience here at Torrance High I believe I have learned a lot. In my last year at middle school they had us pick our scheduled for the next year at Torrance High, I decided to go into the honors program for English( it was one of my stronger subjects). I got I think the best English 1 teacher in the school. Mr. Duvall taught me a better way to organize the information I had read. I got a B first semester.
Questions for Discussion 1. I have come to believe that a love of reading is established in English classes, my experience with this results from my love of reading blossoming through my Language Arts classes when I was younger and has continued to grow once I transitioned into my high school English classes. 2. I actually disagree with Prose’s statement in which teachers deny other experiences besides their personal ones. I have been able to explore the experience offered within the book and have been able to fully grasp what the book offers.
The Process of Learning to Read and Write As hard working students we know about the importance of reading and writing. Reading and writing are our regular work as well as that in order to be able to fully understand and focused in education, we should follow the basic rules and regulations in learning how to read and write, the type of reading where a reader uses different types of reading techniques. However, every reader and writer has their own style of reading and writing. Many people can grow their strategies in learning because they have their own unique styles of reading and learning. In “Learning to Read and Write,” Frederick Douglass has states that the power of knowledge is very important in our life.
As we grew up in middle school and high school, we were often taught to write summaries of our reading. Writing a summary is simply taking the authors original text and condensing it. Both the original text and the summary share the same meaning and thoughts, simply in to different forms. Writing analyses can be interpreted in a different ways. When a writer writes analytically, they go into more depth of the original text.
