There are many types of lipids found in the body and they are: fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, steroids and eicosanoids. Fatty acids are needed because it has many functions of the body, from building healthy cells to maintaining brain and nerve function. Triglycerides are the end product of digesting and breaking down fats in meals. (Nazario, 2012) A phospholipid is composed of two fatty acids, a glycerol unit, a phosphate group and a polar molecule. (Bailey, 2014) According to The American Heritage dictionary of the English language (2011), steroids are carbon atoms arranged in four rings and including the sterols and bile acids, adrenal and sex hormones, certain natural drugs such as digitalis compounds, and the precursors of certain vitamins.” Eicosanoids is a local hormone and is synthsized and extert its actions in the tissues. Eicosanoids are a family of active substances derived from carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids. (Campbell, 2006) Lipids are important because they provide energy and body processes. Fat is energy dense, containing 9 calories per gram, whereas protein and carbohydrate contain only 4 calories per gram. About half of the fuel your body needs when at rest or during everyday activity comes from lipids. (Kannall, 2014) The body can make most of it’s fatty acids except for two. These basic fats, found in plant foods, are used to build specialized fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. (Essential Fatty Acids, 2014) Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are important to the body because without these fatty acids, the tissues of the body would not function properly. Getting enough essential fatty acids leads to benefitial health; such as: relief of menstrual pains, relieft of joint pains and reduction
