They can vary in different size, mass and temperature and also diameters ranging from 450x smaller to over 1000x larger than that of our Sun. Masses range from a twentieth to over 50 solar masses and surface temperature can range from 3,000C to over 50,000 Cather colour of a star can be determined by its temperature, the hottest stars are blue and the coolest stars are red. Energy produced by a star is by nuclear fusion in the stars core. The brightness is measured by magnitude, the brighter the star the lower the magnitude is. There are two ways to measuring the brightness of a star; apparent magnitude is the brightness that can be seen from Earth, and absolute magnitude which is the brightness of a star that can be seen from a standard distance of 32.6 light years. The life cycle of a star, a star goes through different stages in its life cycle. It is determined by the size of the star. In the diagram below shows you the different stages that a star goes through in its life cycle. Stars much bigger than our Sun Main sequence star → red super giant → supernova → neutron star or black hole Stars much bigger than our Sun Main sequence star → red super giant → supernova → neutron star or black hole Stars about the same size as our sun.
