Live life on life’s terms The will to survive is one of the basic human behaviors. Sometimes one must come close to death to encounter what it actually means to survive. However, when faced with death how a person reacts could be the difference between life and death. The story “To build a fire” is about a man who is known by the name “chechaquo”. He is a newcomer and new to the central part of Alaska and especially new to the freezing conditions that this land can produce. The main theme is how this man stubbornly ignored advice given by a charter that goes by the name: “old-timer from Sulphur Creek”. His Lack of experience and respect for nature led to many mistakes and misjudgments. The man had no imagination, only facts guided him. Ultimately, he paid with his life due to his carelessness. “There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun. This fact did not worry the man.” (1). All the warnings of impending disaster where there but he failed to educate himself and respect nature, the terrain and unforgiving climate of the country. The man did not know how to live life on life’s terms. However, the dog new this lesson well, to survive and to act upon instincts was the dogs natural ability. The natural gift to create something from nothing or to be resourceful and deal with problems in a creative manner can only come from a part of the mind that some cannot attain. “The trouble with him was that he was without imagination.” (1). His ability to visualize was impaired by his own arrogance and the thought of another outcome never crossed his mind. The man could not possibly predict the trouble he would face. He only knew that if he kept traveling he could reach the boys. He
