Positives (+ve) of inc. production – social, economical, political. Negatives (-ve) – social, economical, environmental, sustainability. Main Body Guarantee food supply +ve – Inc world population = inc demand for food for humans and animals. Inc soya production in the Amazonia inc food supply globally. Better infrastructure +ve – Better roads = better access to rainforest to get workers in and transport to get crop out. +ve – Find new plants and animals. Particularly plants for drugs. -ve – Roads and deforested areas could contain miracle drugs for us, destroyed by farming soya. -ve – logging illegally – good transport links to remove logs. -ve – Locals can easily get into forest to deforest for farm land. Social & Economic benefits +ve - Subsistent farmers could benefit by producing cash crop. +ve - Federal government offer incentives to inc soya production in region, favourable taxation & subsidies. Eg. Brazil exports 70% of the soya produced, = largest soya exporter in the world (U116, Block 4, p. 109) = inc revenue to Brazil. -ve – Native languages under treat from new settlers brought in to work crops. Medical implications of foreign diseases being brought in by settlers eg. Previous settlers brought smallpox killed 50% population p.52. Diseases passed onto animals. Deforestation -ve - The greatest threat to the increase in soya production in the Amazonia would be greater clearance of the rainforest in order to increase the amount of agricultural land available.
