Life in the Time of War Diane Christian Composition I- 112 Lisa Nikolidakis I would like to take you on a trip aboard my ship called the USS Princeton. The ship is in what they call a cruiser class. It is one of the fastest ships and deadliest on the open seas. The greatest thing about the ship was the spray of the ocean over the side. Seeing the dolphins in the wake of the ship and having the taste of salt in the air. It made me feel like the luckiest person on earth. Until the day, I heard our orders come over my headset. We were to proceed to the Persian Gulf. I had one of the highest clearances on board besides the Captain himself. You see I worked communications and sonar, so I knew everything on board, weather I wanted to or not. My life in the US Navy was easy until those orders came through. It was scary, knowing that I or a person very close to me could die. When my company was in the middle of a shoot out I knew I just knew, that something bad was going to happen, I ended up with shrapnel in my back. I was taken to a hospital in Germany for them to take care of me, until they could send me home. I did get to speak to my mom, which made it a little easier. When I got home, my mom, dad and brother were there. It was nice to see my family. Once my mom and dad saw the VA hospital I happened to be in, I was moved, to a hospital by my hometown and a family friend was in charge. I felt much more secure at home. It has been a very freighting experience being in the war. The nightmares are unbelievable at times. Walking in the 120-degree sun and being in the desert was a horrible sometimes-brutal place. The only thing to look forward to was the evening breeze and the beautiful stars everywhere. I had comfort in the stars, my grandmother always told me to look at the sky and she would always be there. Many a night my teammates would hear me carrying on a
