A bargaining impasse: Occurs when two parties negotiating an agreement become deadlocked and are unable to reach an agreement. Strike: Work stoppage by union and/or workers to influence management’s compliance to a variety of demands. The 2007-2008 Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) strike. Facts: Members of the Writers Guild are employed by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a trade organization that represents the interest of nearly 400 producers in American film and television. In early November of 2007, over 12,000 writers went on strike in order to resolve issues surrounding their largely reduced salaries in comparison to profits received by larger studios. Every three years the WGA (East and West) and the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP) negotiate a new contract in regards to residual compensation. They came to a deadlock when writers wanted more compensation for DVDs and Internet viewing. The AMPTP wanted to keep the content written for or distributed through the Internet and other new media in a promotional category however, the writers were not being compensated and wanted to be paid for Internet streaming content. Reports surrounding the strike estimated an entertainment industry lost of more than one billion dollars. The AMPTP represented many influential corporations including CBS, MGM, NBC Universal and Lionsgate. Resolution: The strike lasted exactly 100 days. The parties reached a bargaining agreement to give the writer’s a certain percentage of profits made from online rentals and subscriptions to view movies and programs. However, on November 19, 2008 the Writers Guild of America declared their intentions to file arbitration against the AMPTP for not honoring the agreement that ended the strike.
