Raena Waldman Ms. Pavelka English 1H A, Period 4 17 November 2011 Adults and Lies: The Strength of the Truth Getting tucked in, having cuts bandaged, and getting sung to sleep are luxuries most children have in a Mother. In Juliet’s case, however, it is not- her real mother barely gives her a second glance and hands her off to the nurse to be cared for and loved, and even then, Juliet is deprived of having that someone who will care for her and have her back no matter what. In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, it shows clearly who is to blame for the barely teenagers’ tragic demise. “Is your man secret? Did you ne'er hear say, ‘Two may keep counsel, putting one away’?” (2.5.185-186). By allowing and even helping Juliet to keep her marriage from her parents, the nurse digs them both into a bigger hole with each lie that passes her lips and every time she helps Romeo and Juliet instead of going to the parents. Had she told the truth the deaths of the young lovers could have easily been avoided, but the Nurse continued to feed people disinformation. In Juliet’s most time of need, she goes on to say “(Romeo) Hath not so green, so quick, so fair an eye As Paris hath.”(3.5.222-223). As the mother figure for Juliet it is the nurse’s responsibility to give advice on what to do, and she gives terrible advice when she tells Juliet to marry Paris. This is a selfish thing to do and it only benefits her social status, and the nurse knows that Juliet does not love Paris. Overall, the situation could have been avoided had the nurse made better decisions and helped Juliet make them as well. So many say that Lord Capulet was the cause for the young loves’ deaths, it is obvious throughout the play that the real cause is none other than the nurse. Yes, Capulet did treat Juliet like property to be sold, but that was how the time was and every father did that. The nurse used Juliet for selfish reasons and a makeshift social ladder.
